Job Description

Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Subject Matter Expert (PNT SME)

 

HII is seeking a Part-time Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) to support the Autonomy and Navigation Technology (ANT) Center located at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) campus at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, Ohio.

On-site requirement at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio.

Hourly Rate: $75-105

Part-time Hours: Estimated between 15-25 hours weekly

Essential Job Responsibilities

 

The SME will be a Senior Technical Advisor on GPS, timing, two-way time transfer, navigation system integration, new technology development, and flight testing to key members of the ANT Center Faculty and graduate students.

 

  • Experience with Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technologies such as:
    • Global Navigation Satellite Systems
    • Integration with inertial navigation sensors and air data systems
    • GPS performance in degraded areas
    • Anti-jam GPS technologies
    • Flight test experience
    • Timing and two-way time transfer techniques for aircraft

 

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • The candidate should demonstrate a hands-on approach to problem-solving and must be willing to actively participate in the evaluation of algorithms and system performance
  • Work with faculty, students and Research Engineers to evaluate new algorithms and tools that support the various autonomy and advanced navigation research projects
  • Review test plans for laboratory and flight tests
  • Recommend and prioritize new technology development for testing and evaluation

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of professional experience in GPS, timing, two-way time transfer, navigation system integration and flight testing, or related research areas
  • Clearance: Secret Clearance preferred OR ability to obtain Secret 
  • U.S. citizenship is required. We are unable to sponsor work visas or employ individuals under Green Card/Permanent Residence/Asylee/Refugee status at this time due to federal contract requirements.

 

Engineer Research Development 5 15 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 13 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 10 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field. 
Engineer Research Development 6  20+ years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 18+ years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 15+ years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.

Preferred Requirements

 

  • Master's degree in Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • 20+ years of professional experience in GPS, timing, two-way time transfer, navigation system integration and flight testing, or related research areas
  • Preferred active Secret clearance at the time of application

Physical Requirements

 
  • Must be able to work on‑site in Dayton, OH, supporting a secure, customer‑facing environment
  • Able to sit or stand for extended periods while working at a computer workstation
  • Occasional lifting (up to approximately 25 lbs) for tasks such as moving equipment or racking hardware
  • Ability to access data center or lab environments, which may require bending, stooping, or climbing short ladders
  • Ability to travel occasionally for meetings, training, or mission support, if required
