Job Description

Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is actively seeking a Network Communications Engineer to support HII’s Integrated Training Systems – Systems Engineering (ITS-SE) program by helping design and refine network architectures that integrate military maritime training systems with operational U.S. Navy combat systems. This role is pivotal in ensuring that training solutions are seamlessly aligned with the actual systems used in Navy, Joint, and Coalition shipboard combat environments.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Work closely with government, military, and contractor personnel to develop and present network architecture options through detailed briefings and comprehensive documentation.
  • Design and implement robust network communication designs that integrate training systems with U.S. Navy combat systems to ensure real-world fidelity in training environments.
  • Maintain and optimize LAN, WAN, WLAN, and VPN infrastructures, troubleshooting performance issues to ensure reliable system operations.
  • Develop test strategies, devices, and systems to validate network communication equipment performance, reliability, and compliance with technical requirements.
  • Conduct stress and performance testing on computer hardware including circuit boards, processors, and wiring, and provide analysis for hardware design, development, and implementation.
  • Support hardware and software installations and maintain updated processes and SOPs to ensure network infrastructure remains efficient and up to date.
  • Build, implement, maintain, and support firewalls and other network security devices, collaborating with stakeholders to troubleshoot connectivity and policy issues.
  • Support the administration of firewalls (e.g., policy configurations, monitoring, software updates, auditing), load balancers, and DNS/DHCP, and help with IPSEC VPN configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Monitor firewall activity, investigate alerts and traffic logs, and support incident response and root cause analysis of network security events.
  • Be prepared for occasional domestic and international travel to shipboard and shore-based test sites, ensuring hands-on support and validation of integrated systems.
  • Independently manage assigned project tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 0 years experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 6 years relevant experience.
  • Proficient with common networking tools, such as Wireshark, PuTTY, SSH, FTP/TFTP, syslog servers, network taps, or SPAN configurations.
  • Strong understanding of key networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, Multicast, Spanning Tree), operating systems (IOS XE, Linux, Windows), and IDS/IPS technologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities are critical for both documentation and briefings.

Client Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in related field (e.g., computer system design, computer programming, or database design)
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of relevant full-time professional experience working as a hardware engineer in shipboard, non-propulsion electronic systems.

In exceptional cases, educational requirements may be adjusted for highly specialized or applicable work experience.

Credentials

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must hold an active DoD Secret clearance.

Preferred Requirements

  • Obtaining a CompTIA Security+ certification (or equivalent/IAT II or higher) and Cisco Network/Security certifications is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Virtual Machine technologies (such as VirtualBox, VMware, Cisco FMCv).
  • Prior experience in network communications within Navy-related shipboard or shore electronic subsystems.
  • Understanding and application of network Information Assurance (IA) tools and precepts, including ACAS, STIGs, and IAVM Notices.
  • Experience with scripting using BASH and Minicom.
  • Specific knowledge of the U.S. Navy’s shipboard combat and training systems (e.g., AEGIS, SSDS, ATD, BFTT, ACTS) is highly desirable.
  • Six years full-time professional experience in at least one major shipboard, non-propulsion, electronic subsystem.
