We are seeking a Journeyman level Marine Welder to provide support at South West Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Product Family located in San Diego, CA. This Journeyman Welder will be responsible for welding tasks, provide structural and non-structural welding services in-shop and aboard ships. This includes hot work operations, component repair, fabrication and metal forming, pipefitting, and ship-fitting. Welder will also perform accommodation ladder/ship’s gangway disassembly, assessment, and component repair to support U.S. Navy operations in San Diego, CA.

What You Will Do

  • Conduct in-shop and on-board welding, including structural and non-structural tasks, hot work, and fabrication.

  • Repair and maintain accommodation ladders and ship's gangways to support U.S. Navy operations.

  • Responsible for interfacing with customers, managing subcontractors and ability to provide work direction to others.
  • May provide direction and lead others and May manage one or more multiple jobs.
  • Completes comprehension of specialty trades functions and tools. Performs a variety of complicated and non-routine tasks.
  • Develops and uses technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports. Schedules, reports and briefs customers and senior management.
  • May perform quality inspections on finished product. Performs duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.

What You Must Have

  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.
  • Must have at least 6 years of experience with pipe bender, universal iron worker, plate shear, portable plasma cutter, oxygen/acetylene torch, drill press, horizontal band saw, vertical band saw, pipe notcher, finger brake, disc/belt sander, operated various GTAW/SMAW/GMAW welding machines, slip roll forming/bending machine, and portable electrical, pneumatic, and hand tools.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CAC ID base access and DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain welding qualifications per the following list within ninety (90) calendar days of starting:
    • GMAW aluminum plate 5356 in the vertical/horizontal/overhead positions.
    • SMAW steel plate 11018 in the vertical/horizontal/overhead positions.
    • GTAW aluminum plate 5356 in the vertical/horizontal/overhead positions.
    • GTAW 2-1/2” steel pipe 70S2 and RN-82 in the 6G position.
    • SMAW steel plate 8N12 in the vertical/horizontal/overhead positions.
    • As required by assignment: Grade III and Grade V Brazing in the vertical/horizontal positions, to include face-feed and insert type fittings.
  • Must be able to complete training and ceritifications within ninety (90) calendar days of starting:
    • OHSA 10hrs
    • CPR
    • Fall protection training
    • Low speed vehicle training (operation of carts)
    • PQS 301 Craftman qualification
  • May be required to obtain forklift license depending on shop need.
  • Must obtain and maintain Marine Chemist Certification. 
  • Start date contingent upon approval of base access which is required for this position and continued employment. 

Preferred: Bonus Points For

  • A current, valid DoD confidential clearance or higher. 
  • MIG, TIG, ARC Welder and Brazing certifications. 

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
