We are seeking a Weight Test and Rigging Support Technician to provide support at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Product Family located in San Diego, CA. This Weight Test and Rigging Support Technician will be responsible for rigging and periodic weight testing certification services to include in-shop components and USN ships weight handling systems.

What You Will Do

  • Provide rigging and periodic weight testing certification services to include in-shop components and onboard weight handling systems.
  • Provide shipboard equipment rigging services for U.S. Navy vessels.
  • Provide component rigging services as provided in SWRMC-assist work center requests.
  • Provide guidance with U.S. Navy vessel weight handling systems and components.
  • Conduct ship-checks to assist in determining scope of work and correct material selection in accordance with applicable NAVSEA drawings and other technical reference documents. The Government will be the final approving authority for scope of work determinations.
  • Provide Journeyman-level support to accomplish the requirements of this task.
  • Utilize the following shop equipment to accomplish the requirements of this task: 200K pull-test machine, 10K CAT 3 non-cab overhead crane, hydraulic swaging machine, hydraulic cable cutter, zinc melting pot, various size chain hoists, beam clamps, dynamometer, various rigging equipment, and portable electrical, pneumatic, and hand tools.

What You Must Have

  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must be able to complete riggers’ qualification in accordance with NAVFAC Publication 307 (P-307), Management of Weight Handling Equipment within sixty (60) calendar days of providing direct support. This qualification requires completion of the U.S. Navy 40-Hour Rigger course.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Category 3 Crane Operator qualification in accordance with NAVFAC Publication 307 (P-307), Management of Weight Handling Equipment within sixty (60) calendar days of providing direct support. Must be able to complete qualifications and able to operate Category 3 Cranes. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the following qualifications within sixty (60) calendar days of providing direct support, when required by specific area of support:
    1. Zinc Socket Pourer in accordance with NSTM Chapter 613, S9086-UU-STM-010, Wire and Fire Rope and Rigging Swage Press Operator.
    2. Swage Press Operator in accordance with NSTM Chapter 613, S9086-UU-STM-010, Wire and Fire Rope and Rigging Swage Press Operator.
  • Must be able to complete OHSA 10 course, CPR, Fall Protection, low speed vehicle training (for operation of carts), and completion of PQS 301 Craftsman qualification within ninety (90) days.
  • May require forklift license depending on shop need – will require forklift physical.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CAC/DBIDS ID Base access and DoD Security Clearance.
  • Start date contingent upon approval of base access which is required for this position and continued employment.

Bonus Points For

  • A current, valid DoD confidential security clearance or higher.
  • Recent Weight Test and Rigging support experience.
  • Prefer technical/professional certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • May require wearing a respirator.
