Job Description

 

Mission Technologies a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries is looking for a qualified individual to fill the role of a Near Coastal Designated Duty Engineer (Limited to 4000 hp) . This person would work with a team that manages high-visibility projects as well as establishing and maintaining best-practices within the organization.

Essential Job Responsibilities

 

  • Serve as the designated duty engineer aboard a vessel operating in near coastal waters, with propulsion power limited to 4000 horsepower.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all machinery, equipment, and systems in the engine room.
  • Conduct routine inspections, tests, and preventive maintenance procedures on propulsion engines, generators, pumps, valves, and auxiliary machinery.
  • Monitor and control engine parameters, fuel consumption, and system performance to optimize efficiency and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems, and implement corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of engine room operations, maintenance activities, spare parts inventory, and fuel consumption.
  • Coordinate with the vessel’s captain, officers, and crew members to ensure seamless integration of engine room operations with overall vessel activities.
  • Comply with all applicable regulations, standards, and procedures related to engine room operations, safety, and environmental protection.
  • Assist with emergency response procedures, including fire suppression, damage control, and evacuation drills.
  • Provide guidance and training to engine room personnel on safe operating practices, equipment maintenance, and emergency procedures.
  • Uphold high standards of professionalism, teamwork, and safety culture in all aspects of engine room operations.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High School education OR
  • Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.
  • Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) License issued by the US Coast Guard, with near coastal endorsement limited to 4000 horsepower.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience as a marine engineer on vessels of similar size and type.
  • Thorough knowledge of marine propulsion systems, diesel engines, steam turbines, and auxiliary machinery.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance techniques for marine engineering systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices for marine engineering operations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Current certification in basic safety training, firefighting, first aid, and other relevant courses.
  • Willingness to undergo drug testing and background checks as required by US Coast Guard regulations.

  • Office, industrial or shipboard environment.
  • Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
  • Lifting and moving of materials not to exceed the guidelines set for one man lift.
