Job Description

 

Mission Technologies a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries is looking for a qualified individual to fill the role of a Licensed Able-Bodied Seaman. This person would work with a team that manages high-visibility projects as well as establishing and maintaining best-practices within the organization for project management. #LI-MA1

 

Essential Job Responsibilities

 

  • Assist with the safe navigation, operation, and maintenance of vessels under the direction of the officer in charge.
  • Stand watch duties as assigned, including lookout, helmsman, and gangway watch.
  • Handle lines, mooring equipment, and other deck gear during vessel docking, undocking, and mooring operations.
  • Participate in routine maintenance and cleaning of the vessel, including painting, chipping, and cleaning of decks and compartments.
  • Assist with the launching and recovery of small boats, lifeboats, and rescue equipment as needed.
  • Perform routine safety inspections of life-saving equipment, firefighting equipment, and emergency response gear.
  • Act as a member of the vessel’s emergency response team during drills and actual emergencies, including fire, flooding, and man overboard situations.
  • Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and protocols established by the US Coast Guard and the vessel’s commanding officer.
  • Maintain accurate records of deck activities, safety drills, and maintenance tasks as required.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.
  • Prefer technical/professional certifications. 
  • Valid United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Able Seaman endorsement.
  • Minimum of [insert number] years of experience as an able-bodied seaman on vessels of similar size and type.
  • Proficiency in seamanship skills, including line handling, knot tying, and boat handling.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations, emergency procedures, and standard operating practices for maritime operations.
  • Physical fitness and agility to perform duties on deck in various weather conditions and sea states.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a crew.
  • Ability to follow instructions, take initiative, and maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations.
  • Willingness to undergo drug testing and background checks as required by US Coast Guard regulations.

Physical Requirements

 

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes.
  • The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
