Job Description

HII Mission Technologies (HII MT) is seeking talented engineers who are excited to work in a flipped engineering environment. Our team in Roanoke, VA specializes in reverse engineering and microelectronics trust and assurance.

Candidates for this position will lead a team performing reverse engineering tasks on existing products. Candidates will be expected to reverse engineer microelectronic and application software using both static and dynamic reverse engineering processes. Additional tasks involve firmware extraction, plugin development, and adding support to simulation platforms for unsupported processors. Candidates will be exposed to and become proficient with a variety of technologies involving microprocessor architectures, software reverse engineering frameworks, reverse engineering toolsets, and more. 

The ideal candidate will have experience with static software reverse engineering tools including Ghidra, Binaryninja, and IDA Pro. The candidate will have experience utlilizing simulation platforms such as QEMU, GDB, Renode and LLVM. The candidate will also be experienced with implementing exploits based on vulnerabilities reported as CVEs. Experience in working with digital logic designs and FPGA systems is also valued in this position.

 

*Position requires full-time and onsite presence in Roanoke, VA.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Candidates for this position will be responsible for leading reverse engineering efforts into systems of interest and mentoring junior engineers in the reverse engineering and development processes.
  • Candidates will be expected to communicate clearly and effectively and demonstrate the ability to understand complex systems with minimal or no documentation.
  • Effective collaboration with teammates on dividing complex systems into manageable subsystems and timely sharing of knowledge is required.
  • Candidates will be expected to produce reports of system capabilities, anomalies, and vulnerabilities at various fidelity levels for various customers.
  • Candidates may also be expected to develop tools or exploit chains based on university papers with limited documentation.
  • Candidates must be U.S. citizens and be willing and able to obtain a DoD security clearance (if not already cleared).
  • Position will be onsite in Roanoke, VA.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Are a United States citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD security clearance
  • Have experience with software reverse engineering tools (Ghidra, Binary Ninja, IDA Pro, etc)
  • Have experience with software debuggers and simulators (GDB, OllyDbg, Renode, etc)
  • Have the ability to learn new skills quickly

 

 

Software Engineer II

2 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 0 years experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 6 years relevant experience. 

 

Software Engineer III

5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience. 

Software Engineer IV

9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 4 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years relevant experience.

Software Engineer V 

15 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 13 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 10 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 19 years relevant experience.

Preferred Requirements

 

You will go above and beyond if you… 

•    Already possess an active security clearance 

•    Have experience with modern C++ standards (>= C++17) and STL 

•    Have experience with Python 

•    Can demonstrate the use of design patterns 

•    Have developed using software development processes (Agile, TDD, etc.) 

•    Familiarity with Verilog or VHDL 

•    Have experience with FPGA design software (Quartus, ISE, Vivado, etc.) 

•    Have experience with software reverse engineering (IDA Pro, Ghidra, etc.) 

•    Are proficient with source control systems (git, svn, perforce, etc.) 

•    Have experience with the code review process 

•    Have experience with binary patching 

•    Have experience bypassing encryption schemes (power glitching, side channel attacks, etc.) 

•    Have published research regarding cybersecurity, software exploitation, or reverse engineering 

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary work: Ability to remain in a seated position for extended periods while performing computer‑based analysis and reverse engineering tasks.
  • Manual dexterity: Ability to use hands for typing, operating tools, manipulating small electronic components, or performing firmware extraction tasks.
  • Visual acuity: Ability to view detailed digital information on screens, read technical documentation, examine microelectronic components, and review code or schematics.
  • Occasional standing or walking: Moving between workstations, lab benches, or collaborative areas.
  • Light lifting: Ability to lift and carry small equipment, electronic boards, laptops, or test devices, typically under 20 pounds.
  • Fine motor skills: Required when interacting with microelectronics, connectors, or debugging hardware.
  • Communication abilities: Clear verbal and written communication for mentoring, collaborating, and writing reports.
  • Cognitive/mental requirements: High concentration, problem‑solving ability, working with complex systems, and learning new technical skills quickly.
