Naval Architect 3 -2908

Date: Jan 27, 2022

Location: Pocasset, MA, US, 02559

Company: HII's TSD

A division of Huntington Ingalls Industries

Come join HII! Where hard stuff is done right!

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Modeling and Simulation Group as a Naval Architect to support our rapidly expanding classes of autonomous vessels.  As HII Unmanned Systems continues to push the boundaries of multi-domain autonomy, one of our primary focuses is the architecture of our underwater vehicles to meet the challenges of their missions.  The Naval Architect will perform naval architecture responsibilities on new autonomous platform designs from development, to integration, and testing, while keeping in consideration the platform life cycle needs, through manufacturing, fielding, and sustainment. They will also carry out computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses to assess and characterize vehicle designs and enable more robust vehicle simulation capability.

A division of Huntington Ingalls Industries

Unmanned Systems

Unmanned Systems, a business group within Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Technical Solutions division, creates advanced unmanned maritime solutions for defense, marine research and commercial applications. Serving customers in more than 30 countries, HII provides design, autonomy, manufacturing, testing, operations and sustainment of unmanned systems, including unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and unmanned surface vessels (USVs)

What you will do

Performs routine naval architecture work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of design and/or analyses of ship hull, foundation, superstructure, arrangements and hull form characteristics tasks. As directed, applies selected techniques and procedures to assignments involving ship design and ship performance analyses. Assists in the solution of difficult problems involved in areas of assignment. Uses prescribed methods to perform specific and limited portions of broader systems design, performance analyse, or hull form characteristic assignments of more experienced naval architects. The duties described herein cover major duties as required. However, this does not exclude the requirement of performing related duties under normal conditions, and other duties directed by supervision.

What we are looking for

  • 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 0-1 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.

Traditional Naval Architecture:

  • Experience using CAD and Engineering Analysis Tools: Solidworks, Abaqus, Rhinoceros, MATLAB
  • Experience in development of marine platforms: hull form, structural strength, stability, weight, speed, ship motion, trim, seaworthiness, and power and endurance.
  • Experience in calculating hydrostatics including maintaining weight and balance databases for vehicles/platforms
  • Familiar with use of equilibrium polygons
  • Experience in calculating hydrodynamics including resistance (drag), propulsion, and stability and control
  • Experience in determination of size, shape, and location of platform equipment (payloads, sensors, machinery, etc.)

Modeling and Analysis:

  • Experience using CFD Tools: Solidworks, Star CCM, OpenFOAM, FINE
  • Experience providing mature CFD support: identify the proper simulation configuration for a given problem, effective simulation set-up, simulation execution, and perform analysis on the results for the given problem.
  • Code development experience (C++/Python/MATLAB)
  • Design of experiments for simulation/tank/at-sea testing
  • Experience characterizing the performance of hull, propeller, and fin designs for replication in a simulation environment
  • Technical writing experience
  • Must have active secret clearance #LI-MH1    *MV *EP *TE

Bonus Points for

  • Exposure to various hydrodynamic simulation environments
  • Experience modeling/analyzing multi-body interactions
  • Experience preparing specifications for the design, manufacturing, maintenance, and repair of platforms as it relates to the marine architecture
  • Experience in assessing and reporting of risk engineering and operations as required in preparation of system and platform designs
  • Experience in setting engineering policy for compliance to naval architecture requirements
  • Experience developing and managing cost and schedule with Excel or MS Project

Physical Requirements

May require working in an office, industrial or shipboard environment. Able to climb ladders and tolerate confined spaces and extreme temperature variances. May require the lifting and moving of materials not to exceed the guidelines set for one man lift. Office environment normally encountered, with industrial/shipboard exposure to be expected on occasion.
