Summary

Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain high‑fidelity visual and geospatial databases that power real‑time simulation, flight training, and immersive environments for the F‑16 Mission Tactics Trainer (MTT). This role blends software development, geospatial engineering, and 3D visual database creation, with a strong focus on performance, accuracy, and reliability in secure environments.

 

The ideal candidate brings hands‑on experience with visual/spatial database development, Python‑based tools and GUIs, and 3D terrain, imagery, and cultural feature integration for simulation systems.

The F‑16 Mission Tactics Trainer is a critical training asset for U.S. and allied pilots. The visual and geospatial databases you build directly impact mission readiness, realism, and training effectiveness. Your work ensures pilots train in environments that accurately reflect real‑world terrain, threats, and operational conditions—ultimately strengthening national defense and aircrew survivability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop visual databases including terrain, 2D/3D cultural features, moving models, and special effects for day, night, NVG, and IR applications.
  • Integrate, debug, and optimize database modeling issues to ensure real‑time performance.
  • Build real‑time 3D geospatial databases for simulation and training by incorporating geospatial source data and cultural feature files.
  • Apply geospatial engineering best practices, testing, and data development to improve data quality and support distributed teams.
  • Implement and support APIs between internal and external system components.
  • Contribute to Agile development processes, including SDLC activities, debugging, and analysis.
  • Prepare and present technical findings and recommendations to leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you must have

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 9 years of relevant experience; OR

  • Master’s degree and 7 years of relevant experience; OR

  • PhD/JD and 4 years of relevant experience; OR

  • High school diploma/equivalent and 13 years of relevant experience.

Technical Knowledge
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including data processing and automation libraries.

  • Experience developing or supporting GUI‑based software tools.

  • Hands‑on experience with geospatial data processing, imagery handling, and coordinate systems.

  • Experience with distributed simulation applications, scheduling tools, and environment generator applications.

  • Experience developing software that uses distributed simulation protocols (e.g., DIS, HLA).

  • Experience developing visual databases, geospatial systems, or simulation environments.

  • Experience developing real‑time simulation software.

Credentials
  • Must have an Information Assurance Training (IAT) Level II certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+) or higher to start. 

  • Must have current or active DoD Secret clearance with the ability to upgrade to Special Access Program / Special Access Required (SAP/SAR).

  • Must be U.S. Citizenship 

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro, CityEngine, or similar geospatial tools.
  • Holda an Information Assurance Training (IAT) Level II certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+) or higher.
  • Background in procedural modeling and rule‑based city/feature generation.
  • Experience supporting DoD simulation, modeling, or training programs.
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices and version control systems (Git, Perforce).
  • Experience managing large‑scale geospatial or imagery datasets.
  • Experience in the DoD simulator community.
  • Experience supporting SAP efforts.

Physical Requirements

Adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements Software Engineer family.
