Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies (HII-MT) Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII-MT.

 

Objective

The SkillBridge intern will train as a Senior Technical Data Maintenance Technician within HII Mission Technologies, supporting AFLCMC/WB weapon system programs. Under the supervision of an HII logistics or engineering lead, the intern will gain hands‑on experience in technical data development, sustainment planning, life‑cycle logistics, and technical order processes. The intern may participate in real technical data and logistics tasks. All work products will be reviewed, validated, and released exclusively by HII employees to ensure full compliance with DoD SkillBridge and representation restrictions. The intern will support technical data reviews, TO updates, logistics analysis, sustainment documentation, and depot‑related planning activities in direct support of the AFLCMC/WB mission.

 

Desired End State (3‑Month Target)

At the end of this training, the intern will learn:

Technical Data Development & TO Lifecycle

  • Apply USAF TO 00‑5‑3, MIL‑STD‑3048, and S1000D standards.
  • Assist in developing, updating, and validating technical data and IETM content.
  • Support CSDB workflows and technical data quality checks.

Life‑Cycle Logistics & Sustainment Planning

  • Understand DoD 5000.02, USAF sustainment policy, and Product Support Elements (PSEs).
  • Support LCSP development, LSA tasks, and sustainment engineering inputs.
  • Participate in depot planning and DSOR‑related activities.

Maintenance Insight Integration

  • Translate aircraft maintenance experience into technical data and sustainment requirements.
  • Identify discrepancies, maintenance impacts, and sustainment risks.

Professional Readiness

  • Strengthen documentation discipline, communication skills, and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Prepare for transition into technical data, logistics, or sustainment engineering roles.

Assumptions / Restrictions

  • SkillBridge interns do not represent HII to DoD or Government customers.
  • All work performed by the intern is training only and is reviewed, validated, and released solely by HII employees.
  • Interns may train on base with HII personnel when authorized by installation leadership.
  • Interns may participate in real technical data and logistics tasks as long as:
    • They do not perform billable work.
    • They do not independently deliver products to the customer.
    • They do not act as HII representatives.
  • All customer interactions occur through HII employees only.

Program of Instruction (POI) - Training Plan

Phase 1 – Foundations and Technical Orientation (Weeks 1–4)
Week 1 - Orientation and Program Overview
HII Mission Technologies orientation and sustainment mission overview.
AFLCMC/WB program structure and weapon system overview.
Review DoD representation restrictions and SkillBridge compliance.
Introduction to technical data workflows and sustainment engineering processes.

Week 2 - Technical Data Standards and TO System
Study USAF TO 00‑5‑3 and TO lifecycle management.
Review MIL‑STD‑3048 and associated Business Rules.
Introduction to AIA/ASD S1000D and CSDB concepts.
Begin assisting with technical data review tasks under supervision.

Week 3 - Technical Order Development and Data Quality
Participate in TO updates, redlines, and discrepancy identification.
Support technical data quality checks and formatting reviews.
Learn IETM structure and content development processes.
Assist with internal TO configuration control activities.

Week 4 - Logistics Foundations and Sustainment Policy
Study DoD 5000.02 and USAF sustainment policy.
Review Product Support Elements (PSEs) and sustainment integration.
Assist with sustainment documentation reviews (LCSPs, training materials, etc.).
Participate in internal sustainment engineering discussions.


Phase 2 – Logistics Analysis and Sustainment Execution (Weeks 5–8)
Week 5 - Life‑Cycle Sustainment Planning
Support LCSP updates and sustainment metrics reviews.
Assist with logistics requirements analysis.
Participate in maintenance planning and sustainment engineering tasks.

Week 6 - Logistics Support Analysis (LSA)
Participate in LSA tasks under supervision.
Assist with maintenance task analysis and supportability assessments.
Review logistics system designs for sustainment impacts.

Week 7 - DMSMS and Supply Chain Considerations
Review contractor DMSMS analyses and recommendations.
Assist with internal DMSMS tracking and mitigation planning.
Support supply support and provisioning‑related tasks.

Week 8 - Depot Planning and DSOR Activities
Participate in DSOR planning and documentation reviews.
Assist with depot maintenance planning inputs.
Support internal coordination for depot‑related sustainment activities.


Phase 3 – Technical Data Integration, Cross‑Functional Collaboration and Capstone (Weeks 9–12)
Week 9 - IETM Development and S1000D Application
Assist with S1000D module development (training‑only tasks).
Support CSDB content structuring and IETM quality checks.
Participate in crosswalks between legacy TOs and S1000D content.

Week 10 - Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Work with logistics, engineering, training, and program management teams.
Participate in internal coordination meetings and workflow reviews.
Support documentation updates across multiple sustainment disciplines.

Week 11 - Advanced Technical Data and Sustainment Integration
Assist with complex technical data updates and sustainment documentation.
Support integration of maintenance, logistics, and engineering inputs.
Conduct final technical data quality checks under supervision.

Week 12 - Capstone, Evaluation and Transition
Complete a capstone project reviewing a technical data package or sustainment artifact.
Present findings and recommendations to HII mentors.
Participate in professional development and transition coaching.
Final evaluation and completion documentation.


Additional Goals
Build professional relationships within the logistics, sustainment, and technical data community (internal only).
Gain exposure to HII’s broader Mission Technologies portfolio.
Strengthen readiness for future roles in technical data management, logistics, or sustainment engineering.

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications accepted within final 12 months of active-duty US military service. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.

  • Minimum of 10 years of logistics relevant DoD experience.
  • 10 years of verifiable experience maintaining military aircraft in a flight line environment.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience working in a SAP and/or SCI environment.
  • Expert in maintaining aircraft electrical & environmental (E&E) systems.
  • Experience developing, using, and maintaining USAF Technical Orders (TOs).
  • Working knowledge of USAF TO 00 5 3, AIA/ASD S1000D specification, MIL STD 3048, and associated Business Rules.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance.
