Job Description

HII- Technical Solutions Division (TSD) is looking to hire an Engineer Structural 2 for our HII Nuclear, Maritime Operations Team in Newport News, VA, supporting Newport News Shipbuilding.

Structural Engineers assigned to the Maritime Operations group support the manufacture, assembly, and testing of the most advanced ships in the world at Newport News Shipyard.  Structural Engineers support analysis on hull and ship structures, survivability and shock analysis, and various other essential functions supporting component and system design.  Our engineers help build assets that will be used to provide for the national defense of our country long into the future.  Additionally, as part of the Maritime Operations group, our engineers have access to a unique professional development program that prepares them for life-long success and opportunities to support HII affiliated companies at Department of Energy sites and contracts around the country.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:
Designs structural components and systems based on required engineering specifications.  Researches various structural materials when designing component/system. Analyzes and adjusts design prototype based on damage tolerance, durability, and design allowances. May perform ship checks to assess areas for improvement and help with future design considerations.  Collaborate with teams from other design yards to finalize system development.  Specific structural engineering specialties may include shock analysis, dynamics and loads, stability, stress fatigue and thermal analysis.  Design products include weight-supporting structures, tanks, and hulls.  Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer or other software applications.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant professional/exempt experience or a Master’s Degree with 0 years.

Physical Requirements

May require working in an office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
