Who We Are

We are seeking a highly experienced, self‑motivated individual who thrives in a team environment and can successfully coordinate engineering projects of varying scope. In this role, you will support both remodeling and new construction initiatives within the Architectural team at NNS.

 
The ideal candidate brings strong experience, initiative, and a collaborative mindset. You’ll help coordinate a range of engineering projects—from remodels to new construction—within the Architectural team at NNS, contributing to critical facility improvements across the shipyard.

What You Will Do

  • Plans utilization of space and facilities for company consistent with requirements of organizational efficiency, and available facilities and funds.
  • Plans, directs and manages all phases of facilities modification and building projects from establishment of design concepts through design and implementation.
  • Ensures project requirements are defined, contract and contract changes are negotiated, operating budgets established, and financial terms/conditions of contract are identified.
  • Acts as primary contact for facilities, project activities and leads project reviews of cost, schedule and technical performance.
  • Establishes milestones and monitors adherence to master plans, budgets and schedules.
  • Identifies problems and develops solutions, such as allocation of resources or changing project scope.
  • Will coordinate the work of employees assigned to the project.
  • Provides technical evaluations, work instructions, commissioning / construction checklists and turnover of assigned project work.
  • Performs quality control and inspection of work. Projects include design and construction of new facilities along with renovation of existing buildings.

 

Additional areas of responsibility include and are not limited to:

 

  • Reviews and estimates design/construction costs including equipment, installation, labor, materials, preparation, and other related costs.
  • Develops and reviews project plans concerning facility or equipment specifications, company or government restrictions, required completion dates, and construction feasibility.
  • Prepares bid documents and contracts for construction and facilities acquisition.
  • Perform code evaluations, conduct building assessments, space planning and respond to emergent related issues in a fast paced, large industrial campus/complex setting.
  • Directing work assignments of consultants and contractors to ensure shipyard facilities and structures are constructed and maintained in a safe condition.
  • Responsible for ensuring clear articulation of priorities, targets, metrics and accountabilities.
  • Monitors and reports project performance and initiates corrective measures.

What You Must Have

  • 10 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 8 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 14 years relevant experience.
  • The candidate should possess strong skills in project management, scheduling, organization, leadership, communication, and computer proficiency.
  • The candidate must be able to work independently as well as contribute effectively within cross‑functional teams.
  • The candidate must have experience leading construction projects.
  • The candidate must have experience working in heavy industrial facilities.
  • The candidate must be familiar with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, International Building Code, City of Newport News Code of Ordinances, ADA requirements, OSHA standards, and NFPA regulations.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with SAP.
  • The candidate must be a U.S. citizen.
  • The ideal candidate must be eligible to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Bonus Points For Having!

 

  • Experience in maintaining project status through SAP and/or PPM systems.
  • Certification in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Quality Control Program.
  • Familiarity with Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with processes and procedures of Architectural Value Stream within the Facilities Division at NNS
