Who We Are

HII Mission Technologies is currently seeking a highly skilled Industrial Hygienist 4 for our HII Nuclear, Maritime Operations Team at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA.


As part of the HII Nuclear Maritime Operations group, our professionals have access to a rare and unique professional development program that is intended to prepare our employees for life-long success with our HII affiliates supporting different Department of Energy sites and contracts around the country.

 

This role will involve advanced industrial hygiene practices to assess, manage, and mitigate workplace hazards across various operations. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance, lead safety initiatives, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, supporting the well- being of employees while enabling operational excellence. 

What You Will Do

  • Conducts health program in industrial plant to recognize, eliminate, evaluate and control occupational health hazards or environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace or facility that may cause sickness, impaired health or well-being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers or citizens of the community.
  • Coordinates the monitoring of all workplace environments by analyzing work operations and processes, materials, equipment, and work habits of employees
  • Measures the magnitude of exposure to workers of all environmental hazards by selecting or devising methods and instrumentation suitable for such measurements
  • Presents specific conclusions and recommendations to appropriate management groups.
  • Prepares rules, standards, and procedures as necessary to promote the healthful conduct of all work practices and the prevention of hazardous or nuisance exposure to the surrounding community.
  • Directs epidemiologic studies to discover possibilities of the presence of occupational disease and to establish or improve threshold limit values or standards as guides for the maintenance of health and efficiency.
  • Assists supervision in educating employees on practices, precautions, and procedures established.
  • Reviews present and proposed standards and surveys new installations.
  • Audits programs and conditions at all facilities
  • Provides written reports of findings with recommendations for improvement (where needed); and follows up on implementation.

What You Must Have

  • 9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 4 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years relevant experience.
  • Candidate must have deep knowledge of OSHA.
  • Candidate must have proven experience in hazard identification, exposer assessments, and risk mitigation strategies. 
  • Candidate must have strong technical skills in sampling, monitoring, and analytical techniques for environmental health and safety evaluations. 
  • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to non- technical stakeholders. 
  • Candidate must have the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks in a dynamic, fast - paced environment. 
  • Candidate must have strong leadership skills and experience working with cross- functional teams. 
  • Candidate must have experience working in shipyards. 

 

Bonus Points For Having!

  • Additional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or similar. 
  • Experience in specific industries such as defense, manufacturing, or energy. 
  • Familiarity with industrial hygiene software and tools. 

Physical Requirements

Exposure to fumes and irritants normally encountered in industrial or shipboard environment. May involve gathering data while observing rotating or operating machinery, electrical or electronic equipment with high voltages present.
