Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies (HII-MT) Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII-MT.

 

Objective
The Skillbridge intern will train as a Combat Systems Test Engineer within HII-Mission Technologies' Global Security group, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the goal of learning carrier new construction combat systems test engineering principles and practices. This training program will provide the intern with a comprehensive understanding of naval combat systems, technical documentation, and test engineering methodologies. The intern will gain hands-on experience with key systems such as AN/UPX-29 IFF, AN/SPN-46(V)6/7 landing systems, and various RADAR systems. This program will prepare the intern for potential employment opportunities within HII Mission Technologies or similar organizations in the defense industry, specifically in roles related to fleet sustainment and combat systems maintenance. The intern will participate in ongoing projects and be assigned special tasks as needed to enhance their learning experience and contribute to the team's objectives.

 

Desired End State (3-4 month target)
At the end of four months, the internship will Prepare the transitioning service member for a successful career in Fleet Sustainment and Combat Systems Test Engineering at HII Mission Technologies, with a focus on carrier new construction and combat systems maintenance.
Specific Learning Goals:
1. Combat Systems Familiarization - Gain in-depth knowledge of key naval combat systems, including:

  • Interior and Exterior Communication Systems
  • SHF Communication Systems
  • EHF Communication Systems
  • HF Communication Systems
  • Digital Multiplexing Radio (DMR)
  • HFRG

2. Technical Documentation and Analysis - Develop proficiency in:

  • Producing engineering documentation and reports
  • Creating technical drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, schematics)
  • Performing mathematical calculations and data analysis

3. Test Engineering Procedures - Learn and apply:

  • Combat systems test methodologies
  • Troubleshooting techniques for electronic systems
  • Quality assurance processes in naval engineering

4. Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the Skillbridge intern and considers the Skillbridge internship an overall positive experience.

 

Assumptions/Restrictions

  • Candidate must have a current/active Secret Security Clearance.
  • Skillbridge Intern will be available during core hours for critical meetings and training.

Training Location: Newport News, VA

 

Training Plan
Week 1: Orientation and Introduction

  • Company orientation and overview of HII Mission Technologies
  • Introduction to the Global Security Group
  • Basic security protocols and clearance procedures
  • Tour of facilities and meet key personnel

Week 2-3: Combat Systems Fundamentals

  • Overview of Naval Combat Systems Architecture
  • Basic troubleshooting techniques for electronic systems

Week 4-5: Advanced Combat Systems

  • CVN Communication Systems
  • New Construction Communications Suite

Week 6-7: Technical Documentation

  • Engineering documentation standards and best practices
  • Creating technical drawings: flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics
  • Report writing and data presentation techniques

Week 8-9: Test Engineering Fundamentals

  • Combat systems test methodologies and procedures
  • Quality assurance processes in naval engineering
  • Data analysis and interpretation techniques

Week 10-11: Hands-on Project Work

  • Shadow experienced engineers on ongoing projects
  • Apply learned skills to real-world scenarios
  • Participate in troubleshooting and maintenance activities

Week 12: Final Project and Evaluation

  • Complete a capstone project integrating learned skills
  • Present project findings to team leaders
  • Review performance and discuss potential career opportunities

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications accepted up to 12 months from separation or retirement. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.

  • SECRET security clearance
  • AA or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years of related experience, or HS + 5 years related (DoD/USN) experience.
  • Prior electronics troubleshooting and maintenance experience

Preferred Requirements

Prior experience in:

  • Interior and Exterior Communication Systems

  • EHF Communication Systems
  • HF Communication Systems
  • Digital Multiplexing Radio (DMR)
