Summary

HII Mission Technologies is seeking a Terrain Database Engineer to support the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) Team at the Joint Integrated Test and Training Center – Nellis (JITTC‑N), located at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV. In this role, you will help maintain, enhance, and expand the data environments that power JSE simulators. This position is ideal for a Software Engineer‑type professional with strong database and scripting skills who can support a wide range of technical tasks across the program. This is an on‑site role at Nellis AFB (non‑remote role).

Your work directly contributes to the performance and realism of next‑generation simulation and test environments. By ensuring databases, terrain data, and storage systems are optimized and reliable, you help maintain critical capabilities for Air Force training and test missions.

What you will do

  • Maintain continuous operation of multiple data storage solutions supporting the JSE (SQL databases, terrain databases, and related systems)
  • Modify and expand existing databases to support simulation boundary growth
  • Monitor databases to ensure consistent and optimized performance
  • Support development teams in designing new database structures and programs
  • Write scripts, queries, and support tools to increase storage capacity and system efficiency
  • Generate and review system and database reports
  • Perform debugging and resolve database program/script conflicts
  • Follow best practices for secure data storage, backup, and archiving
  • Document configuration, performance, and database design processes
  • Stay current on database engineering tools, trends, and best practices

What you must have

Education & Years of Experience (one of the following):
  • 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 3 years of relevant experience with a Master’s degree in a related field
  • A PhD or Juris Doctorate in a related field
  • 9 years of relevant experience with a high school diploma or equivalent
Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience with database design, modification, maintenance, and performance tuning
  • Ability to write scripts, queries, and support utilities (e.g., SQL, Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar)
  • Familiarity with secure storage, backup, and data‑handling best practices
  • Strong debugging and problem‑solving skills across database and storage systems
  • Ability to document workflows, processes, and technical configurations
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation abilities
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet customer requirements
Credentials
  • Must have held an active Top Secret clearance within the last 24 months.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD TS/SCI with relevant SAP/SAR access.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with terrain databases or simulation‑related data environments
  • Experience supporting modeling, simulation, test, or training systems
  • Familiarity with JSE, DoD simulation environments, or government test ranges
  • Knowledge of secure enclave environments and data‑handling procedures

Physical Requirements

Adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements Software Engineer family.
