Who we are

HII-Australia is seeking a Program Director to join the team! This role will be located in Henderson, Australia. This position will provide ultimate leadership, accountability, and assurance that the site operates safely, securely, and in full compliance with nuclear regulations. Unlike other executive roles, this position carries personal legal responsibility under the nuclear site licence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Nuclear safety accountability: Holds ultimate responsibility for nuclear safety, radiation protection, and compliance with the site licence conditions.
  • Regulatory compliance: Ensures adherence to national nuclear regulators’ requirements (e.g., ANNPSR).
  • Strategic leadership: Defines and delivers the site’s vision, mission, and long-term strategy aligned with corporate goals.
  • Operational oversight: Oversees plant operations, maintenance, and engineering to guarantee safe, reliable performance.
  • Emergency preparedness: Leads planning and readiness for nuclear incidents, ensuring robust response capabilities.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Builds trust with regulators, government, local communities, and shareholders.
  • Financial stewardship: Manages budgets, investments, and cost efficiency while prioritizing safety.
  • Workforce leadership: Develops a strong safety culture, motivates staff, and ensures competence through training.
  • Risk management: Identifies, assesses, and mitigates nuclear, environmental, and business risks.
  • Sustainability and ethics: Promotes environmental responsibility and ethical governance in nuclear operations.
  • Submitting regular performance reports indicating deviations, corrective action taken and escalation of issues.
  • Responsible for the allocations of resource to optimise the organisation's return on investment.
  • Develop and Manage Capability driving the program/portfolio.
  • Technical expertise: Deep understanding of nuclear engineering, operations, and safety management.
  • Leadership under pressure: Ability to make critical decisions in high-stakes environments.
  • Regulatory knowledge: Familiarity with nuclear legislation, licensing, and international standards.
  • Communication skills: Clear, transparent communication with regulators, staff, and the public.
  • Integrity and accountability: Demonstrates ethical leadership and personal responsibility for nuclear safety.

What you need to have:

  • 10 years relevant progressive experience with Bachelors in related field; or 8 years relevant progressive experience with Masters in related field.
  • 10 years in senior leadership roles within nuclear, energy, or other highly regulated industries. 
    Experience in overseeing major capital projects is crucial. This includes managing budgets, timelines, risks, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Building strong relationships with senior customers and stakeholders is essential.
  • Track record of successful collaboration and negotiation in complex programmes.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive operational efficiency, continuous improvement, and innovation within large-scale programmes.
  • Familiarity with managing infrastructure assets across their lifecycle, including disposal.
  • Have extensive experience of Project Management, in a Project Manager role in a highly regulated environment.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance at the following level; AGSVA Negative Vetting – NV1.

Bonus points for:

  • 20+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Project management experience in any of the following phases within the Nuclear, Infrastructure or construction sector: - Functional specification, Concept design, preliminary design, detailed design, procurement, construction, works testing and site installations, set to work energisation, inactive or active commissioning, and final handover & acceptance.
