Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII. 

 

Objective

The SkillBridge intern will train as a Technical Artist 2 within HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor (Holly South), with the goal of learning the actions and duties required of our Technical Artists in support of various Newport News Shipbuilding customers such as photography, videography, 2D graphics development, and more. The intern will be assigned special projects, as needed.

 

Desired End State (3 month target)

  • At the end of three months, the intern will be able to apply design knowledge, Adobe Creative Suite experience, and project standards to create 2D graphics for training purposes; understand requirements of and complete photo requests on board US Navy aircraft carriers; and apply knowledge of cameras and requirements of storyboards to execute photo and video shoots.
  • The intern will develop a good understanding of the Multimedia department at HII Fleet Support Group:
    • Learn about department’s range of capabilities
    • Apply photography abilities and Aircraft Carrier knowledge to complete photo requests supporting RCOH planning activities
    • Complete Multimedia Requests (MMRs) in following areas:
      • 2D graphics development
      • photography and photo editing
      • videography and video editing
  • Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern’s knowledge and experience specific in photography, videography, Adobe Creative Suite, and Naval Vessels (specifically Aircraft Carriers) and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience.

 

 

Assumptions/Restrictions

  • SkillBridge Intern must have a Confidential or Secret Clearance.  
  • SkillBridge Intern will be available during business hours of the contract supported for meetings and training.

Program of Instruction

Training Location: Hampton, VA

 

Training Plan

 

  • Week 1: In processing, Introductions/office familiarization.
  • Week 2: Introduction to Mission Technologies internal customers, briefing on Multimedia department capabilities, and any required training courses (business conduct, cybersecurity, etc.)
  • Week 3: Intro to basic departmental operations including Multimedia Request (MMR) process
  • Week 4: Completes 2D graphics MMR(s) using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Week 5: Introduction to camera and studio equipment and Photo/Video process
  • Week 6: Completes Photo and/or Video MMR(s) using Adobe Premiere
  • Weeks 7 & 8: In-depth briefing on RCOH Media Library product and Shipcheck process including safety brief
  • Weeks 9 & 10: Completes Shipcheck Photo Requests
  • Week 11: Opportunity to shadow and work with other Technical Artists in areas of 3D modeling and animation, 3D printing, audio recording and editing, etc.
  • Week 12: Engage with HII PM and team for performance and evaluation feedback

 

NOTE: Weeks 6 through 11 may be re-sequenced depending on ship schedule and photo/video shoot schedules.

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications accepted within final 12 months of active-duty service. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.

  • Navy Mass Communications Specialist (MC) experience 5 years
  • Confidential or Secret Clearance
  • Aircraft Carrier Experience
  • Adobe Creative Suite Experience
