Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII. 

For this internship, the SkillBridge intern will train as an Engineering Technician 4 within HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor (Douglas Paredes), with the goal of learning the maintenance actions and duties required of our Engineering Technicians in support of the LCU 2000 SLEP vessels and the required maintainer responsibilities. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

  • At the end of three months, the intern will be able to further develop skills needed to be presented with a problem, trouble shoot, provide recommendation or path forward to offer a solution, complete reports specific to PMCS of SLEP equipment and support pierside repair work.  

  • The intern will develop a good understanding of the LCU 2000 SLEP upgrades and engines that require PMCS support and continuous maintaining to include:

    • Utilize PMCS schedule and complete maintenance actions

    • Troubleshooting and diagnosing SLEP systems

    • Documenting conditions found and completing weekly PMCS report

  • Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern’s marine engineering knowledge and experience specific to Army Watercraft and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience.

Assumptions/Restrictions

  • SkillBridge Intern will be eligible for Secret Clearance.  

  • SkillBridge Intern will be available during business hours of the contract supported for meetings and training.

 

Training Plan

Contract Introduction  

  • Week 1: In processing, Introductions/office familiarization.

  • Week 2: Introduction to the various SLEP equipment and upgrades as well as the applicable safety measures required for HII

 

SLEP Maintenance

  • Week 3: Intro to basic equipment operations, maintenance and documentation for reporting

  • Week 4: Intro to historical problems presented and solutions designed, fabricated and tested to solve the particular problem

  • Week 5: Introduction to CAT ET, setup, and operation

  • Week 6: Connect MSD to prime movers for simulated shortcomings, troubleshooting and proper testing

  • Week 7: Perform routine PMCS per the vessel schedule under the supervision of senior leadership and document weekly PMCS report for the vessel

  • Week 8: Plan and execute process to service SLEP systems prior to and during a lengthy deployment

  • Week 9: Familiarization with the process when a problem or discrepancy on one of the SLEP vessels is identified and how recommendation is provided to the program office

  • Week 10: Support development with 23 MP with Engineer Systems IV on the task

  • Week 11: Support pierside maintenance repairs / emergent work orders in accordance with work package

  • Week 12: Engage with HII PM and team for each of the SLEP systems performance and evaluation feedback.

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Transitioning Military candidates can begin applying within final 12 months of military service. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.

  • Must have AA or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years of related experience, or HS + 5 years related experience.
  • Must have preventive maintenance checks & services (PMCS) experience on shipboard systems.
  • Must have hands on experience with the following systems and associated equipment; propulsion, hydraulics, piping, pneumatic, electrical and power generation.
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD secret level clearance and maintain clearance throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain base access credentials within the first 60 days of hire and maintain credentials throughout employment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Requirements

  • Candidates with 88L20/30 transportation school certification or higher are highly desired.
  • Candidates with hands-on maintenance experience on Landing Craft Utility (LCU-2000) or other US Army watercraft systems highly desired.
  • Prior experience leading and directing hands-on trades teams preferred. 
  • Experience with Cummins and/or Caterpillar engines a plus.

Physical Requirements will vary and is dependent on the Program of Instruction.
