Job Description

HII Mission Technologies Division is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) at Eglin, Air Force Base on a the critical, short-term engineering and algorithm development requirement. This effort will focus on providing specialized algorithm expertise to enable the AFRL team to deliver detailed guidance and informed data to a prime contractor, directly supporting an upcoming software Critical Design Review (CDR) in December 2026. To prevent a critical gap in capability while optimizing fiscal resources, the government requires highly specialized, part-time contractor support (constrained to 8 hours or under per week, targeted at 7 hours per week). This targeted level of effort will focus strictly on expanding the existing Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) system—transitioning it from a disconnected, manual workflow into a fully connected, automated pipeline—and integrating higher-fidelity baseline data. By replacing simplified, legacy assumptions with more accurate, unclassified physics-based ship models, this work will enable the systematic analysis of underkeel engagement tactics and isolate the precise input variables needed to optimize seeker algorithm performance.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • DAO Pipeline Automation: Expand the existing MDAO system from its current state as a disconnected, manual workflow and transition it into a fully connected, automated pipeline. This will create a unified, streamlined system capable of executing automated, large-scale design space explorations to optimize seeker algorithm performance.
  • High-Fidelity Baseline Data Integration (Unclassified/CUI): Integrate higher-fidelity baseline data into the automated MDAO pipeline. The contractor shall replace simplified, legacy assumptions with more accurate, unclassified physics-based ship modeling parameters. No detailed lethality areas or classified datasets shall be utilized.
  • Large-Scale Simulation & Design Space Exploration: Utilize the automated pipeline to run large-scale design space explorations, systematically analyzing thousands of underkeel engagement tactics scenarios using unclassified modeling tools.
  • Seeker Algorithm Optimization: Analyze parametric simulation outputs to isolate and identify the precise combinations of unclassified input variables needed to optimize seeker algorithm performance. This expertise will enable the AFRL/RABS SUNK team to provide a prime contractor with detailed guidance and informed data to support the target program of record ahead of the upcoming software CDR in December 2026.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2 years relevant experience with Bachelors in Mechancal, Aerospace, or a related engineering field; 0 years relevant experience with Masters in Mechancal, Aerospace, or a related engineering field; or 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate iMechancal, Aerospace, or a related engineering field.
  • Direct Pipeline Architecture Experience: The position requires demonstrated experience in the mathematical design, optimization, and development of the team's underlying MDAO framework, particularly utilizing large-scale hypercube sampling and parametric modeling methods.
  • Demonstrated Engineering & Scientific Excellence: Requires a proven record of high-level applied engineering design, including technical development and top-tier placement in national or international-level scientific or engineering optimization competitions.
  • Continuity of Critical Program Deliverables: Continuous technical alignment with the underlying MDAO system is mandatory to support the SUNK team's deliverables to the prime contractor. This specific part-time technical bridging effort is required to maintain momentum, prevent a critical break in technical continuity, and ensure a successful software Critical Design Review (CDR) in December 2026.
  • Must possess immediate, hands-on operational capability with the core software files, mathematical modeling code, and automated execution scripts of the existing MDAO pipeline.
  • Clearance- Must be able to possess and maintain a clearance.
