Job Description

HII is seeking a Strategic Communications Strategist position.  This role is within the AFWERX team, responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing programs aimed at engaging diverse communities across the ecosystem, stakeholders, and industry partners. This role requires a combination of strategic planning, project management, relationship building, and communication skills to effectively promote the AFWERX mission and goals, and Director priorities to a variety of audiences, both internal and external, to address the most pressing challenges of the DAF.










Essential Job Responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive strategic communication plans aligned with AFWERX priorities, including research, audience analysis, message development, and channel strategy.

• Submit communication plans and deliverables for Government approval.

• Execute integrated communication strategies across media, social platforms, websites, presentations, and other channels, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and OPSEC compliance.

• Partner with internal subject matter experts to generate content that supports AFWERX strategy, strengthens brand initiatives, and enhances stakeholder understanding of program performance.

• Produce internal communication materials to keep personnel informed about ongoing initiatives, priorities, and achievements.

• Stay current on communication trends, best practices, and emerging technologies.

• Build and maintain relationships with ecosystem stakeholders such as government agencies, nonprofits, and industry partners to support joint communication initiatives and strengthen AFWERX’s reputation.

• Evaluate communication efforts using defined metrics; identify effectiveness, outcomes, and areas for improvement.

• Manage complex cross-functional relationships and collaborate across the Strategic Communications team to ensure unified messaging.

• Maintain brand consistency across all communication products.

• Participate in discussions and meetings to gather information, provide subject matter expertise, and support AFWERX goals.

• Tailor communication products to specific target audiences to effectively convey AFWERX’s value.

• Travel as needed to engage with ecosystem partners and support AFWERX program education and outreach.

• Create and manage integrated communication plans for campaigns, events, and projects aligned with organizational objectives and stakeholder needs.

• Identify cross-collaboration opportunities across divisions and organizations.

• Lead messaging and content strategies for platforms including press releases, social media, internal channels, and the intranet.

• Ensure consistent communication across all internal and external channels.

• Collaborate with division leaders, internal teams, and external partners to deliver targeted communication solutions.

• Foster strong internal relationships through effective, transparent communication.

• Ensure all content aligns with brand guidelines and organizational priorities.

• Support writers, designers, videographers, and other content creators.

• Serve as the Strategic Communications point of contact for an assigned division or program, maintaining full understanding of goals aligned with AFWERX/SpaceWERX priorities.

• Assess communication needs, recommend appropriate channels, develop project plans, and proactively provide communication solutions.

• Track and measure communication performance using analytics tools; report on outcomes and adjust strategies based on data.

• Use stakeholder feedback to refine communication approaches.

• Continuously explore new communication tools, tactics, and processes to improve effectiveness.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

●6 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field such as communications, public relations or marketing; 4 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 10 years relevant experience.  

●Skilled in extending narratives across various media channels to achieve communication goals and objectives.

● Strong strategic planning and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

● Excellent interpersonal, communication, and networking skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

● Proficiency in data analysis, reporting, and evaluation techniques to measure the impact and effectiveness of communication efforts.

● Ability to think critically and make decisions, pay attention to detail, and has a self-starter mentality.

● Proficiency in digital communication tools to include Google Workspace.

● Flexibility to work in fast-paced environments and adapt to changing priorities and have strong time management skills working under tight deadlines.

● Ability to work autonomously in a highly dispersed organization.

  • Active Secret Clearance required

Preferred

  • 7+ years of experience in program management, or related field, preferably within a military or government context.
  • Preference Master’s degree in, business administration (MBA),organizational management, strategic management or program/project management.
