Summary

Join HII Elevator Support Unit (ESU) in Chesapeake, VA as we keep the most powerful Navy the world has known afloat and ready to serve. ESU trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Mechanic candidate will support ESU by installing, modernizing, and providing maintenance of shipboard weapons handling systems. Selected candidate will be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task.

What You Will Do

  • Installs, operates, maintains, repairs and modifies equipment.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance and technical support on products such as equipment, integrated systems and subsystems, and software at customer and/or field locations.
  • Analyzes and evaluates products and related performance. Troubleshoots and diagnoses malfunctions to eliminate problem in minimum time.
  • Installs, upgrades and removes products ensuring coordinative engineering field change. Maintains effective customer communications and relations.
  • May provide onsite training of customer support personnel. Applies understanding of production and processes to assignments. Performs a variety of complicated tasks.
  • May assist in the development and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports. Performs duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.

What You Must Have

  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 2 years of related experience.

  • Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.

  • Must have experience installing, maintaining and repairing structural and mechanical systems and associated equipment.

  • Must have experience using various power tools and measurement devices.

  • Must have the ability to read, interpret and follow blueprints, technical drawings and/or technical manuals.

  • Must have knowledge of safety and quality control steps and procedures.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Confidential security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.

  • Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.

  • Must be able to travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.

  • Must be able to provide hand tools per trades designation.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Preferred: Bonus Points For

  • Shipboard experience is preferred.

  • Candidates who have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school, apprenticeship program or a skilled trades certificate program are preferred.

  • Current or active DoD security clearance a plus.

  • OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus

  • Experience with installation and maintenance of mechanical systems US Navy, commercial or automotive.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
