Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team of innovators in Alexandria, VA. We're looking for a seasoned expert with creative mind, diverse fabrication skillsets, and expertise based on a deep understanding of customer mission priorities.
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will serve as a chief technical expert for a broad range of mission critical projects. You'll be a go-to expert for multifaceted engineering challenges, from concept development and system architecture to detailed design, analysis, and testing. This is a hands-on impactful role where you'll guide and mentor talented junior engineers while providing the strategic vision for your projects. You won't just be an engineer; you'll be an architect of solutions that enable strategic missions.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Researches, plans, designs, verifies, validates and develops mechanical and/or electromechanical products and systems, such as metals, instruments, controls, plastics, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, resonance, hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs. May be responsible for the transfer from R and D to manufacturing.

Lead the design and development of complex mechanical systems and subsystems for defense and security applications.

Serve as the primary technical lead for multiple projects, ensuring all designs meet rigorous performance, safety, and reliability standards.
- Conduct advanced thermal, structural, and kinematic analysis to validate product requirements.

Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior mechanical engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software developers, and program managers, to integrate complex systems.
- Drive the entire product lifecycle from initial concept and prototyping to manufacturing and field support.

Contribute to business development activities by providing technical expertise for proposals and new program initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- 20+ years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 18+ years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 15+ years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.

Proven experience as a technical lead on complex, multi-disciplinary projects.

Expertise in CAD software and FEA/CFD analysis tools.

Strong knowledge of materials science, manufacturing processes, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Existing network professional engineers and client representatives within or adjacent to HII-Mission Technologies' Intelligence Community customer base
- An active TS/SCI clearance with Poly
Physical Requirements
Exposure to fumes and irritants normally encountered in an industrial environment. May involve gathering data while observing rotating or operating machinery, electrical or electronic equipment with high voltages present.
