Job Description

Mission Technologies, a division of Huntingdon Ingalls Industries (HII), is seeking a motivated Machinist Apprentice to join our team at our Alexandria, VA location.

HII's 4-year apprenticeship program was developed in close coordination with the Virginia Department of Labor to satisfy the Commonwealth of Virginia’s training curriculum requirements.  The program features two main elements: on-the-job machining training and 144 hours of relevant coursework per year through ToolingU, an online career-based learning center.  The program is tailored for our business to support our manufacturing capability and for the individual to provide a well-rounded experience.  Upon completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice is awarded the title of Journeyman Machinist and is presented with a certificate of completion from the Commonwealth of Virginia.


The successful machinist apprentice candidate is expected to have little to no machining experience but shall possess a strong mechanical aptitude and a desire to learn skills that can serve as the foundation of a productive and rewarding career. 

Essential Job Responsibilities

Learn all aspects of machining and related shop theory (equipment, processes, tooling, materials) required by the apprentice program  
•    Learn and follow all safety procedures of the machine shop
•    Learn the proper use of calibrated measuring instruments
•    Learn how to read and interpret engineering drawings
•    Learn how to operate machines such as lathes, mills, and various cutting equipment
•    Clean and maintain machines and keep work area orderly.  Learn preventative maintenance procedures on equipment
•    Maintain no less than a “B” average on all academic courses required by the apprentice program
•    Maintain accurate time keeping for the Apprenticeship log book
•    Take a proactive approach to continuous improvement including productivity, quality, safety, and shop environment

Minimum Qualifications

•    US Citizenship and ability to obtain a government clearance
•    Be at least 18 years of age
•    High School education with passing grades in at least two of the following:
     -  Algebra I or Algebra II
     -  Geometry
     -  Mechanical/Drawing
     -  Vocational/Technical Education
     -  Principles of Technology
•    Strong mechanical aptitude

•    Strong work ethic
•    Well organized and able to manage tasks 
•    Attention to detail

Physical Requirements

May require working in an industrial or shipboard environment. Normally not required to lift more than 40 pounds higher than three feet above feet/floor level. May encounter extremes of temperature, pollution, humidity, noise, and other environmental factors while collecting data, observing performance of task teams.
