Job Description

Program of Instruction (POI)

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII. 

For this internship, the Skillbridge intern will train as a Program Manager 1 within HII Mission Technologies, reporting to the designated Mission Technologies Supervisor, with the goal of learning how to operate and function is support of the Business Development team for the Cyber and Electronic Warfare Systems Group of Mission Technologies. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

Desired End State (3-4 month target)

  • At the end of four months, the intern will be able to describe core functions of program management (as well as other supporting functions), have a basic knowledge of in-demand technologies, procedures for contracting with government, managing program operations to ensure production schedules are met, system resources are utilized efficiently and effectively, and proper relationships are established between customers
  • The intern will cost gain a functional understanding of schedule, performance, and risk identification / mitigation on initiatives including but not limited to systems, tools, equipment, software, facilities and other activities
  • The intern will be oriented to profit and loss of a large complex program • The intern will be trained on all phases of programs, with primary emphasis on inception (business development)
  • The intern will support an operation located at one primary geographic location
  • HII Mission Technologies will benefit from the military and experiential background of the SkillBridge intern and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience.

Assumptions/Restrictions

  • SkillBridge interns are not authorized to represent HII to DoD or Government customers while participating in the DoD SkillBridge Program Internship. Interns can participate and train behind the scenes as long as they are not interacting with customers.
  • If candidate is selected and approved, SkillBridge Intern can be present in Dayton, OH; HII Mission Technologies will fund all travel costs, if needed.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Training Plan

Phase 1 - Basics

  • Week 1: In processing, Introductions/office familiarization
  • Week 2: Intro to Program Management, Operations, Annual Operating Plans, and business development
  • Week 3: Intro to primary customer contact for program activities, leading program review sessions with customer to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance
  • Week 4: Intro to program milestones and monitoring adherence to master plans and schedules, identify program problems and obtains solutions, such as allocation of resources or changing contractual specifications
  • Week 5: Intro to work of employees including management level assigned to the program from technical, manufacturing and administrative areas

Phase 2 – Program Management

  • Week 6: Week immersed in Acquisition Engineering portfolio program management.
  • Week 7: Week immersed in Specialty Engineering portfolio program management.
  • Week 8: Week immersed in Information Warfare portfolio program management.
  • Week 9: Week immersed in Engineering Technology and Prototyping portfolio program management.

Phase 3 – Federal Contracting

  • Week 10: HII Mission Technologies existing FEDSIM, IAC MAC contract vehicles, available ceilings for additional revenue generation, and how DoD customers use these pathways to pay for services and products
  • Week 11: How Operations interacts and supports Growth elements – Business Development, Capture Management, and Proposals
  • Week 12: Standardization practices across various business groups, process options to suit specific needs, and preventing project failures
  • Week 13: Review of previous 12 weeks and conclusion of internship

Additional Goals

  • Facilitate networking with base personnel

Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications accepted within final 12 months of active-duty service. Education and Experience required is dependent on Program of Instruction.
