Join HII Marine Services Operations (MSO) in Chesapeake, VA as we keep the most powerful Navy the world has known afloat and ready to serve. MSO trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Second Class Pipefitter** candidate will support MSO, working closely with our skilled trades teams on surface ships performing welding processes and related duties on shipboard structural removals, installations, and upgrades for industrial equipment. Selected candidate will be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.

**Candidate must be able to demonstrate brazing ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within two weeks of start date for continued employment.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.
  • Support trades team by working on active class surface ships, performing alterations and installations for fleet modernization contracts such as Naval Surface Warfare Center and Naval Information Warfare Systems Command.
  • Apply comprehensive understanding of production and processes, specialty trades functions and tools to provide technical support, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify shipboard systems, integrated systems and related equipment/software at company, customer and/or field locations.
  • Perform a variety of complicated and non-routine tasks including duties outside of specialty to complete installation or work assignment in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
  • Cut, fit, assemble, and position pipe, tubing and support structures to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structure using hand and powered tools.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance and technical support on products such as shipboard systems, integrated systems and related equipment at company, customer and/or field locations.
  • Utilize and work from technical documents including blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, technical manuals work orders, controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • May perform quality inspections on finished product and provide onsite training of employees and customer support personnel when required.
  • May interface with customers, subcontractors, provide work direction, and lead others. Maintain effective customer communications and relations.  Schedule, report and brief customers and senior management.

Minimum Qualifications

**Candidate must be able to demonstrate brazing ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within two weeks of start date for continued employment.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must have High School education/equivalent, and 4 years of related naval shipboard pipefitting experience.
  • Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.
  • Must have knowledge and experience with standard pipe fitting procedures, bending processes for tubing and pipe, testing installed piping systems and silver brazing processes in accordance with NAVSEA Tech Pub. 7000 and NAVSEA Standard Item 009-12.
  • Must be able to work from blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction.
  • Must have knowledge of quality control steps and procedures.
  • Must be able to work outside of trade specific requirements as team projects require, assisting team members towards task completion.
  • Must have knowledge of quality control steps and procedures. Must be able to follow and enforce safety procedures.
  • Must have experience working in a team environment and be able to communicate effectively with others.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
  • Must be able to travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.
  • Must provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation.

Preferred Requirements

  • Current or prior silver brazing qualification certificates Grade III, IV and V preferred.
  • Ability to interpret specifications for the purpose of fabrication and/or installation a plus
  • Candidates with current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL-STD-248 preferred.
  • Candidates who are currently enrolled or have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program are preferred.
  • Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification preferred.
  • Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate a plus.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
